CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A . Background of study
Education has a strategy role in development of a nation. The quality of the human resource of a nation can be improved by education. This national education has to be able to ensure the equality in opportunity to get an education, the improvement of education quality, the improvement of education relevance and the improvement of efficiency of education management.
In education the teachers read text books. English text books should have correct, natural, recent, and standard English. Since students vocabulary is limited. The vocabulary in textbooks should be controlled or textbook should provide information to help students understand vocabulary that they may not familiar with for lowers level students, grammar should also be controlled. Many textbooks use narratives and essays. It would be useful to have variety of literary forms.
No textbook is perfect. Therefore, teachers should have the option of assigning supplement materials based on their own specific needs in their own specific teaching situation.

B. Purpose of study
No text is perfect. So we have to analysis the weakness and the advantages of the textbook.
To match the textbook to the program and the course. Prior to selecting a textbook, education should thoroughly examine the program curriculum. If the goals and curriculum of the program are clear and well defined, the parallels with certain textbook may become obious. For example, if one of the goals of the program is to give student an opportunity to interact with authentic text, then books that use articles written for native English speakers would be appropriate. If the program focuses on developing reading fluency, books designed, to support the development or reading skills would be appropriate.
At this point, another decision needs to be made whether to choose a textbooks series or to use individual texts for each course. There are advantages and disadvantages and disadvantages to each choice, educators must prioritize the factors most crucial to their situation. A series has advantage of standardizing content and approach across levels, guaranteeing consistency of presentation of skills, spiraling of vocabulary, and reasonable progression of text difficulty. However, this regularity can become monotonous and predictable for learns and could potentially cause an increase in negative attitudes toward the textbooks or even toward the course it self. Using individual textbooks allows for more precise matching with course objectives and a greater variety in design and content. Yet, there can be serious gaps in the material covered from one textbooks to the next, close communication among instructors across level is essential.
